How to Choose the Right Space for Your Home Office: 5 Things to Consider

If you’re like most budding entrepreneurs, you’re looking to start small and keep your expenses low in the early phases of running your business. When addressing the issue of space, most choose to set up an office in the home for starters. Even though you may not plan on being at home forever, you should consider a handful of criteria before determining just where in your house to set up shop luxury office chairs.

1) PRIVACY: First and foremost, you should consider the issue of privacy. Where can you locate your office that will be free from distractions? Are there children or pets running around your house? I always recommend a space with a door if at all possible; it’s wonderful to be able to shut that door to signify to other members of the household that you are “at work” and not to be disturbed while the door is closed. It’s also nice to be able to close the door when you finish up, signifying that “work” is over for the day. Sometimes the hardest thing about working from home is being able to STOP working; shutting that door can help you to shift gears from being at work to being able to relax at home for the evening.

2) SPACE: You may not have the luxury to be as picky as you’d like here. Often, you get whatever space is available in the house, but… for a moment, let’s assume that you have your choice of rooms in the house! If so, you’ll want to make sure that you have plenty of space for all the activities that you’ll be performing for your business. Most everyone will need at least a desk / computer and some filing space, but… what else will you need? Are you providing a product or service? Will you be carrying inventory? Where will you put it? If you’ve got a product, you’ll also probably need some type of shipping and supplies areas. Do you have adequate space for this? Before determining where in your house you’d like to locate, try to think of the tasks that you’ll be performing in order to come up with the space that best fits you. 3) LIGHTING: Again, if you’ve got the luxury to choose, pick a room with lots of natural lighting. The more windows, the better. Working from home can be lonely at times; there’s something about having a view that helps you feel less isolated and more a part of the outside world!

4) POWER: With all of the wireless technology of the day, it’s easier than ever to set up a home office in virtually any area of the home. Mobile phones, laptops, and printers can all be wire-free, but you may still have other needs for electrical outlets or phone jacks. Again, try to think of all of the functions that you’ll be performing in your new office environment prior to locking in on the area that you’ll use for your office.
